Dr. Shawn Metcalfe doesn't want to leave N.L. — this is home, heck, even the building he practices in used to be the Jumbo Video where he'd rent movies — but demoralized and uncertain about the future of health care in the province, he's leaving for N.S.

Dr. Shawn Metcalfe has been working as a family physician in the province for the last 10 years. After great consideration and long conversations with his wife, he'll be leaving soon to move to Nova Scotia. - ContributedST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Dr. Shawn Metcalfe went into family medicine in Newfoundland and Labrador to develop long-term relationships with patients in his home province and improve their health, day to day, from the trenches.

“It’s resulted in some Kafkaesque situations, where you know the MRI is the … test of choice and you order it, but then you’re told you can’t,” he said. Combine that it being low pay compared to other specialties and former Health minister John Haggie making “plenty of denigrating comments towards family medicine and our scope of practice and the complexity and value of what we do, and it becomes a situation where a lot of us feel very demoralized and it makes it very difficult to want to stay in a place like Newfoundland and Labrador," Metcalfe said.

“I don’t want to leave, but the reality is … I don’t know what my future is like in this province with practising family medicine here, given the daily struggles and the inability to do my job and not the tools to do my job.” “There’s literally no beds in the hospital, there was legit nothing we can do, everything’s on diversion,” she said.“They changed their schedule because they can’t retain staff, so I would work seven days on with only two days off,” she said.Brenton doesn't want to miss out on watching her nieces and nephews grow. But when she started becoming “salty” towards her job, she knew it was time to move.
