While millions across the world went to see James Cameron’s “Titanic' multiple times during its unprecedented nine-month theatrical run, Afghans had to turn to secret markets and streetside sellers operating in the shadows to watch the $200-million epic.
KABUL—When the Taliban first ruled Afghanistan in the 1990s, all forms of entertainment were banned. Residents of Kabul and other cities often recall seeing ribbons of video and audiotapes hanging in shreds, as if they, too, had been put to death.
“Everywhere we turned people were talking about it,” says Haris, who asked that his last name not be used. Though most people rented the film for anywhere between 3,000 and 8,000 Afghanis a night, like many other young boys at the time, Haris and his friend had heard about the infamous “draw me like one of your French girls scene,” so they really wanted to purchase a copy to keep.
Instead, they turned to a man in their neighbourhood who would roam the streets at night and pull cassettes and videos out of a bag, “like a drug dealer,” so their parents wouldn’t know that they had spent so much money on a movie, especially one known to have a racy scene in it.When they pressed play, neither Haris nor his friends understood much of the dialogue, but they got the gist of the story.
Young boys started replicating Jack’s floppy locks, in what would come to be known as “Titanic-y” haircuts.
