In the years leading up to the start of the pandemic, about one in four children in the province lived in poverty. But in 2020, the rate fell seven per cent, to 16.4 per cent. Aylward said it shows that bold, barrier-free income supports can play an important role in reducing child poverty, especially when paired with strong public services, such as affordable child care and housing, and systems changes to address the fact that single women-led families and racialized families bear the brunt of poverty.

It’s something Sonya Smith is seeing first-hand at the food bank run by the Single Parent Association of Newfoundland . "So, once that happened, of course we were able to provide some food hampers for those people and help them as best we could, but I think since COVID, there seems to be a greater need out there than there was even before COVID, and we're seeing it."
