Strike votes are taking place until April 7, right in the middle of this year’s tax season, running from Feb. 20 to May 1.

There would be little disruption to the process of filing taxes in a strike situation, says Ian Lee, an associate professor at Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business.

“The person himself or herself data inputted it digitally, so they didn’t need a public servant to data enter the return,” Lee said. “I’m not saying you don’t need any public servants at CRA, I’m just saying, at the front end of the tax process, it’s not what it once was years ago, when people filled out long forms and physically mailed them to a data processing centre.”Article content

“All taxes that are claimed by the CRA bear interest on a daily compounding basis,” Krishna said. “Taxpayers can file their returns electronically, but nothing will happen. They’ll just be frozen.” Krishna added that a strike could also cause a backup of the judicial system if taxpayers decided to try to resolve disputes about money owed there.
