Cybersecurity activity \u0027likely threatens individuals’ safety and security, in addition to increasing distrust,\u0027 says new report

“State-sponsored cyberthreat actors almost certainly” target those groups in order “to monitor and control these individuals,” Canada’s cyber defense agency said in a new report. The tools they use include “content monitoring on foreign-based applications, social media-enabled activity and espionage against individuals using spyware.”Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

Rajiv Gupta, associate head of the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, said the report should be seen as a “call to action.”Recommended from EditorialThe last cyberthreat report from the CSE did not mention a threat to journalists or activists. “We’re concerned, as all Canadians are, in terms of the voice of media and the targeting of journalists by other states,” Gupta said.

The report said China, Russia, Iran and North Korea also pose a threat to Canadian businesses. “It is likely that over the next two years, these states will continue to target sectors of importance for their own domestic economic development. That said, the threat from China is very likely the most significant by volume, capability, and assessed intent,” CSE said.

“Machine-learning enabled technologies are making fake content easier to manufacture and harder to detect,” CSE said. “Further, nation states are increasingly willing and able to use [misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation] to advance their geopolitical interests.”
