When a military camp was established on the Aylesford barrens in the 1880s, various militia units from Cape Breton and nearby areas trained there. | SaltWire

North Kentville's Ed Coleman plays the bagpipes. - FileKENTVILLE, N.S. — When a military camp was established on the Aylesford barrens in the 1880s, various militia units from Cape Breton and nearby areas trained there., Brent Fox notes that along with the Pictou Highlanders, the Cape Breton Highlanders trained at what eventually became Camp Aldershot.

Traditionally, pipers were fixtures in military units based in the eastern counties of Nova Scotia. So, from the dates I’ve given, we could assume these militia units introduced the bagpipe to the Annapolis Valley, and to Kings County in particular when they came to Aldershot — although the odd photograph of pipers can be found in photographs taken in Kentville in the mid-1800s.

Then, in 1952, the Black Watch, along with its pipe and drum band, arrived at the camp. For nearly a decade the band performed at various events, further enriching the art of piping, at the same time establishing a core of civilian pipers that would keep pipe music alive and flourishing in the county. The Black Watch and their pipe band left Aldershot for Gagetown in 1959. By this time, thanks to the regiment, piping was firmly established in Kings County.

The 14 Wing Greenwood pipe band is typical of units the military established at bases across Canada. All members of the band are volunteers except for the regular forces pipe major and drum sergeant. While Kings County is a hotbed of piping, thanks to the military bases at Aldershot and Greenwood, the same can’t be said of Annapolis County. Actually, there is little or no piping tradition there that I’m aware of.
