We are all sincere on Christmas Day. We are happy in the enjoyment of our year’s prosperity, in our family reunions, in our exchange of greetings with friends. Our gifts are poured out without stint among our friends who return the compliment with equal graciousness; we remember such of the poor as we have knowledge of and subscribe liberally to such charities as are brought to our notice, but too often our beneficences end with the day.
The angels’ message was not alone for the Christmas Day 1900 years ago. It was a prophetic vision of future ages when the taper over the humble manger cradle, then lighted, would communicate its flame to other tapers until the whole world should be lighted up. Slowly, the tapers are being lighted; slowly the story of the humble birth, the self-sacrificing life, the martyr death, is lighting up the dark places of the Earth.
To find these and bring them something of the brightness of Christmas, not in toys and sweets and food alone but in the brightness and cheer of Christmas sympathy and Christian fellowship, is one of the last joys of the Christmas season.
