Glen Constantin has done and won it all in U Sports football, but the long\u002Dtime head coach of Laval has never taken a run at the professional ranks.
The Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League need a new head coach and their GM Danny Maciocia — who coached for the University of Montreal against Laval for several years — has a short list of four candidates. Is Constantin on it? Not necessarily, because Maciocia knows how happy Constantin is at Laval.Article content
“Is he a viable candidate for any CFL head coaching job? I would say yes, he is someone you would consider. He’s the kind of guy, if it’s something he wanted to do, I would encourage any organization to interview.” And there’s the rub. Constantin has said he would never take a flier on a short-term contract in the CFL, in part because of the security he has at Laval. And how many CFL organizations would be willing to offer a long-term deal to somebody who hasn’t coached a minute in the pros? Not many.
“I think he’s super content there,” said Maciocia. “I think they treat him so well. He’s got a great gig. He can attract the best of the best. He doesn’t have to deal with professional football players, free agency, who do I pay and who do I walk away from? He can attract the best players at every position. In the pros, you can’t do that just because you are conditioned by the salary cap.
