Canadian journalists more likely than those in several other countries to report online attacks

“They can appear online, in the courtroom and in politicians’ speeches. They can come from anonymous strangers, bot farms, or the highest levels of government.”

The new report says the reputational attacks are different than media criticism as they are “intended to harm journalists’ credibility in the public eye.”Article content And while Canadian reporters have not faced the same physical threat as their counterparts abroad, the level of harassment is higher in this country.

Almost three-quarters of all respondents “identified politicians and public officials as sources of reputational attacks,” the report said.Almost 40 per cent of the 149 respondents identifying as belonging to a marginalized racial, ethnic, and/or religious group reported monthly reputational attacks that specifically targeted their identities, the report also said.
