Influenza has arrived in Nova Scotia and the province’s chief medical officer of health is urging Nova Scotians to get a vaccine before it surges in December.
“At this time of year, it’s not surprising to see a very small . . . number of cases in our respiratory watch but we expect in the coming weeks we expect to see more, and typically we get our influenza surge late December, into January, February.”Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health, at a news conference announcing the availability of this year's flu shot, in Halifax on Monday.
“People who have significant immune compromise or other significant chronic health conditions. Pregnant women are of a significant increased risk for influenza for themselves and their unborn child, it’s important they get their flu vaccine,” Strang said. “We have a reasonable amount of COVID still around and it’s putting some pressures within the health-care system resources, but with all the other challenges we have . . . even a typical flu season has the potential to put pressures on our health-care system,” Strang said. While getting a flu shot, get up to date on COVID vaccines too, Strang said.
