As more than 1,500 Ontario Liberals gather in Hamilton for the party’s largest convention in a generation, there’s a growing sense the Grits are on the comeback trail after consecutive disastrous elections.
Look no further than Premier Doug Ford, whose Progressive Conservatives ended a 15-year Liberal dynasty in 2018 andFord, who often ignores the Official Opposition NDP in the legislature’s daily question period, pounced on a query Tuesday about the Greenbelt land swap from interim Liberal leader John Fraser.
Whatever his intention, it was a telling reminder that Ford, whose Tories hold 83 seats, is far more worried about the Liberals in the 2026 election than the New Democrats, who have 30 seats in the 124-member house. Liberals from across the province will decide on whether to switch to a one-member, one-vote system to elect a new leader — as the Tories and NDP have done — or stick with delegated conventions.
But a date for a leadership convention will not be set this weekend — that’s a decision to be made by the new party executive being elected Sunday.
