Gushue and Co. never surrendered a steal in a dominant performance at the Pan Continental Curling Championships, which earned the rink a berth at the 2023 world championship in Sandviken, Sweden.

Team Canada members, from left, alternate Nathan Young, lead Geoff Walker, second E.J. Harnden, vice-skip Mark Nichols and skip Brad Gushue hold the trophy after capturing the Pan Continental Curling Championships men’s title at the WinSport Event Centre in Calgary on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2022.It’s another first for Brad Gushue and his team from St. John’s, N.L.

“It’s nice to win the first one,” Gushue, whose crew never surrendered a steal all week, told reporters after the morning victory. “We played well all week. With the exception of four ends against the U.S. in our first-game , I thought we were in control of our game and put rocks in good places.

The victory extends Team Gushue’s string of international podium appearances over the past year. The team earned bronze at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games and silver at the 2022 world men’s championship. South Korea did make some exceptional shots early in the game to limit the damage. But as the game progressed, Canada’s prowess was more on display.

It was Japan that took out the Canadian women, when after Fujisawa & Co. — the reigning Olympic silver medallists — engineered a come-from-behind 6-5 victory in Saturday’s semifinal round. Neither team managed to convert and score more than one point with hammer until the ninth end. Leading by three, Canada jammed a double attempt on its final shot. It left Japan with a hit for three to tie the game.
