Immigration, ramped-up skills training needed as more local workers near retirement
That may seem odd because the Sault has often been linked to a job shortage as compared to a labour shortage, with the local economy so heavily tied to Algoma Steel’s highs and lows throughout the years. The main reason for the shortage is that more workers will be retiring without enough younger people to fill their shoes.
AWIC has found that 29 per cent of workers in the education, law, social, community and government services sector are over the age of 45. “We find that it includes professional occupations where you’re looking for qualified people that have the technical skills and the professional designations. It takes time to find those people, and the people that are unemployed and looking for work don’t necessarily have the skills and qualifications for those vacant positions.”
“There are a lot of disconnects. Parents might not be well informed on what opportunities there are in the area to influence their children and they are the number one influence in most cases. Skill sets for those underemployed or unemployed do not necessarily fit those vacant positions. There is a skills mismatch.”“Immigration, training and retaining the current workforce is definitely important. There needs to be a concentrated effort there,” Alves said.
“Employers could encourage and support the older workforce to remain longer, so that could involve being more flexible in their schedules and contract work. They’re full of knowledge and experience and as soon as they go, that’s gone. Employers need that mentorship and that knowledge transfer for younger workers,” Alves said.
