Group managed to slice off section of Bansky image on side of scorched building in Kyiv
A group of people tried to take a mural by graffiti artist Banksy on Friday by cutting away a section of battle-scarred wall where it was painted, the governor of Kyiv region said.
But they were spotted at the scene in the city of Hostomel near Kyiv and the mural was retrieved, Oleksiy Kuleba said in a statement.“These images are, after all, symbols of our struggle against the enemy … We’ll do everything to preserve these works of street art as a symbol of our victory,” he said.
One of the other murals shows a girl gymnast performing a handstand on a small pile of concrete rubble. Another shows an old man having a bath.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in late February and the litany of apparent war crimes will no doubt be on everyone’s minds at the Assembly of States Parties session. In many ways, the international community’s unprecedented response to this conflict has been a tipping point, with countries individually and collectively activating an extensive range of accountability mechanisms at lightning speed. Within a matter of weeks, the ICC prosecutor opened an investigation in Ukraine following a referral by a record number of countries, underscoring what can be achieved with an ample dose of political will and moral courage. Canada has been at the forefront of many of these efforts, using virtually every tool at the government’s disposal to deliver justice for victims of grave international crimes. In addition to joining in referring Ukraine to the ICC, Canada imposed a series of targeted sanctions on more than 1,000 individuals and entities complicit in human rights abuses. In May, following a request by the ICC prosecutor, Canada also announced a voluntary contribution of CDN$1-million and the deployment of a team of Canadian investigators to support the prosecutor’s work. Despite the messaging that linked these contributions to Ukraine, raising unfortunate perceptions of politicization in the court’s work, these funds cannot be earmarked and should be used across all investigations on the prosecutor’s docket. But, while these contributions signal a strong commitment to justice, they also serve as an acknowledgment by Canada that the court does not have the resources to fulfill its mandate.
