Victoria visits Alberni Valley on Friday night

Victoria Grizzlies defenceman Hoyt Stanley capped a big early season personally in the B.C. Hockey League by committing this week to NCAA Div. 1 Cornell Big Red.“That’s a great combination,” added Stanley, who sports a perfect 4.0 GPA, and plans to study finance and business.

“Last season was a setback but I worked hard over the summer to prepare for this season and it has paid off,” said the six-foot-two, 200-pound blue-liner.“I feel I’m a two-way player who can move the puck offensively with good size for the back end in our zone,” he said. He comes from a sporting background. Stanley’s dad, Graham Stanley, played pro hockey in the AHL, ECHL and IHL. Sister Kaiden Stanley plays field hockey in the NCAA Pac-12 for the University of California-Berkeley and is on the NextGen Canadian junior national team. Mom Kyra Stanley was internationally ranked in trampoline.

Higher rate of government bills starting in Senate down to ‘ambitious agenda,’ says HollandHigher rate of government bills starting in Senate down to ‘ambitious agenda,’ says HollandA higher proportion of government bills—almost 23 per cent—have been introduced through the Senate so far this Parliament, a trend Government House Leader Mark Holland says comes down to efficiency and the Liberal government’s “very ambitious agenda.”  “Both Chambers are going to be involved either way. This allows us to maximize our efficiency of moving the most legislation forward … so, yeah, you are seeing more [start] there. I think when you take a look at S-5, that’s a great example of a bill that normally would have started in the House but we started in the Senate, and it allows us to keep two parallel tracks moving as efficiently as possible to advance that legislative agenda,” said Holland (Ajax, Ont.) in a Nov. 24 interview with The Hill Times.  “We have a very ambitious agenda, and of course, we also have a Senate that is more independent, less partisan, and plays a really critical role in our legislative process and they have been very good to work with.”  Bill S-5, which seeks to amend and modernize the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (among other things) and is currently at committee stage in the House, was introduced in the Senate by the government’s representative, non-affiliated Senator Marc Gold (Stadacona, Que.), on Feb. 9, with ISG Senator Stanley Kutcher (Nova Scotia) subsequently taking it on as sponsor.  Given its modernization as a more independent Chamber, the Senate can “bring a different perspective to legislation,” said Holland, and starting a bill in the Upper Chamber means that by the time it arrives in the House of Commons, it’s already “had a lot of those questions [about the legislation] vetted and considered and responded to when we start with them, which allows the House to be more efficient.”  As of Nov. 22, Bill S-5 is one of 10 government bills that started their legislative journey in the Senate since the 44th Parliament began in November 2021, while 34 have been introduced through the House. That works out to 22.7 per ce
