Five candidates faced off Wednesday night in the first debate to feature high-profile challengers in Toronto’s hotly contested mayoral election. Seven takeaways from the first debate of the mayoral byelection.

Five candidates faced off Wednesday night in the first debate to feature high-profile challengers in Toronto’s hotly contestedWith some of the most prominent names in the race staying away — Josh Matlow, Olivia Chow and Ana Bailão didn’t attend — the event offered a chance for challengers trailing in the polls to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack ahead of the June 26 voting day.

When asked how to revitalize a downtown that emptied out during the pandemic, Bradford touted his proposal for a congestion relief commissioner who would be in charge of making it easier to get around the core, while Saunders, the former police chief, said it’s difficult for people to come into the city because gridlock means “nothing is moving.”

When asked about compensating small businesses whose bottom lines are hurt by disruptions cased by transit construction, Perruzza, who is councillor for Humber River—Black Creek, said the city needed to ensure that work crews don’t leave machinery around that isn’t doing anything but “tak up a lane and clutter your roadway.”Not surprisingly given the focus of the debate, the candidates floated various proposals to reduce costs for small businesses.

Perruzza said the city should lower commercial property rates further than it already has to bring them more into line with residential rates, “so that would mean a much bigger tax reduction for small businesses.” Bradford claimed credit for council’s approval in November 2021 of a new small business property tax subclass that lowers rates on eligible properties and which he said provides “critical relief” for mom and pop enterprises.Hunter’s participation in the event came hours after she resigned as Liberal MPP for Scarborough-Guildwood, a position she held for 10 years.
