April 2015 rescue saw car sinking in icy water of Annapolis River

Three members of the Aylesford Fire Department received Decorations for Bravery from the Governor General during a Sept. 9 ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. From left are firefighter Mark Robinson, Chief Shawn Carey, and Capt. Bryce Carey. A fourth department member, First Deputy Chief Owen Collins, received his Decoration for Bravery at an earlier date. Robinson used an axe to cut a hole in the windshield and, with the assistance of the captain, connected the winch to the car. Shawn pulled the passenger onto the car's roof and Robinson took her to shore. “It was a group effort, absolutely, and there are some that didn’t get the medals that sure deserved it."

Shawn said the woman who survived the 2015 car crash wrote the department a letter soon after the event thanking them for their heroic efforts.
