Assurances by the Trudeau government that Canada\u0027s greenhouse gas emissions would decrease annually after 2019 lasted for exactly one year.

The new message from Guilbeault, is that Canada’s emissions “have stayed significantly below pre-pandemic levels” with this year’s federal budget “representing the single biggest package of climate commitments in Canada’s history” that “will take total federal investments north of $200 billion.”Article content

In order to reach the 2030 target — which translates into 439 million tonnes of emissions — the government will have to reduce annual emissions by 231 million tonnes in nine years. That’s the equivalent of all emissions from Canada’s oil and gas sector in 2021 plus another 42 million tonnes, the equivalent of 81% of 2021 missions from the electricity sector .

The final problem with counting emissions is that the latest data released by the Trudeau government retroactively decreased Canada’s historical record of emissions going back to 1990 by 270 million tonnes — compared to the figures it released a year ago. The Trudeau government said last year Canada’s emissions in 1990 were 595 million tonnes. This year it says they were 589 million tonnes.
