Ottawa Senators winger Claude Giroux insists he’s not poring over the NHL standings and hitting the refresh button over and over again.
With a record of 8-12-1, the Senators were eight points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final wild card spot heading into Wednesday’s games.
“We talked about that this morning, 15 games or something in 30 days,” said Giroux. “It’s a lot of games, but sometimes that’s a good thing when you’re trying to get a few wins in a row. This stretch here, it’s important that whether it’s a loss or a win, no matter what, just get ready for the next one.”
The Senators felt they had played well enough to be ahead in the third period, but they didn’t panic in pushing to force a goal. That was an issue earlier in the season when the Senators gave away far too many games with their own timely mistakes. Smith says there’s now “a belief” that the team can win tight games if they maintain the same approach from start to finish.
“I saw when he beat his guy and I tried to yell as loud as I could,” Giroux said. “It was a great backhand pass. had body position and even if he didn’t make the pass, I was stretching the ice, so he had room to skate.”
