Girls and young women in Grades 11 and 12 are being offered the opportunity to take part in the inaugural year of Camp Molly, a four-day summer camp devoted to prospective firefighters
In its inaugural year, Camp Molly is poised to take in girls and young women in Grades 11 and 12 to teach them about firefighting over the course of four days in August.
The City of Greater Sudbury is hosting the camp from Aug. 17-20, during which girls and young women will be afforded the opportunity to learn about firefighting tasks and career options with the city. Campers will get an inside look at a career in fire and emergency services and will rotate through a series of activities based on Firefighter Level 1 training, such as Fire Investigation and Fire Dynamics, Medical Scenarios, Auto Extrication, Firefighter Survival and Forcible Entry.
Space will be limited to 35 participants, and eligible participants must submit an application explaining why they would like to attend Camp Molly, meeting the following qualifications: The camp is named after Molly Williams, who was a slave in 1818 when she became the first female firefighter with Oceanus Engine Co. 11, in Lower Manhattan. She is known for answering a call to duty when all of the male firefighters became sick with influenza.
