Girl Guides says the renaming is part of the organization’s goal to create a more inclusive space for all girls and young women to feel “welcomed in Guiding.”
Girl Guides of Canada says it’s changing the name “Brownies” — its branch for seven- and eight-year-olds — in an effort to create “more inclusive spaces” for racialized girls in Canada.
Girl Guides Canada CEO Jill Zelmanovits said that during the pandemic, parents told the organization’s board of directors the name made people feel they did not belong. Zelmanovits said the company heard reports some girls would take a break from Girl Guides programs while they were seven to eight years old to avoid participating in the group. Others, Zelmanovits said, would drop out altogether.
The selection process will open for current members on Nov. 29 and will close Dec. 13. The new branch name will be announced January 2023. In 2015, Girl Guides of Canada formally welcomed trans girls. In 2019, the organization released a new uniform of a T-shirt or tunic, after input from members asking for a uniform that better reflected the girls’ diversity.
