Padres' full-strength bullpen little consolation as teams loses late for second night in a row
Attempting to bounce back from one of the season’s toughest losses, the Padres suffered arguably a more crushing defeat.
But Pederson’s solo home run off Nick Martinez tied the game in the eighth, and Martinez took the loss after issuing a one-out walk to Luis Matos and one-out single to Patrick Bailey in the eighth. Hader’s night began with a walk of Casey Schmitt, which loaded the bases. After Hader struck out David Villar, Matos scored the winning run.
Two of the relievers who finished the game — Steven Wilson and Martinez — had been unavailable Monday due to a heavy recent workload. He went about racking up more innings Tuesday with a vengeance, striking out the three batters he faced in the first inning and two of the three he faced in the second.The Padres had scored twice in the top of the third.
In the fourth, the Padres lost a potential run on an out at third base for the second night in a row.
