LAS VEGAS –The odds of the Ottawa Senators making the playoffs are long and getting longer.
This losing skid is showing no signs of stopping. General manager Pierre Dorion and coach D.J. Smith are searching for answers but as the Senators prepare to the quarter-pole of the season, the reality is setting in that this will be the sixth straight year the club won’t be in the playoffs.
“You’ve got to go baby steps. You have to take it one game at a time. You can’t look at the big picture, you look at the record and you see it’s going to be a challenge to get back into the playoff spot. Goaltender Cam Talbot allowed two bad goals in the first five minutes of the second period, sealing the Senators fate. Talbot gave up three goals on seven shots and had a lousy .571 save-percentage in this game.Article content
The last two games haven’t been good enough, but neither has the goaltending. This was the second straight game Smith has switched his netminder early in the second period, and that’s not a good trend.This was Ottawa’s 10th loss in 12 games and this tour of the Western Conference is only going to get more difficult.
“Sometimes when you’re doing the right things and you’re not getting rewarded and they score, you sigh a bit and say, ‘Oh man’,” said veteran defenceman Nick Holden. “We need to get back on them quicker and we took too long to do that.
