“I remember last year. stood on his head in this building and we could have won the game,” Batherson said. “He’s really talented and it was just nice to be able to beat him with a few and get a win in this barn.” It was DeBrincat’s seventh goal of the season and, since he only has two goals in his last 11 games, he’d take one any way he could get it. The Senators deserved that break, too, because everybody knows they’ve had enough go against them this season.
“They’re a big, heavy team and they’re probably the heaviest team we’ve played, but I just thought as a whole we stayed with it,” Senators head coach D.J. Smith said. “We used everybody. Our penalty killing was really good. I just thought, as a whole, we played heavier game, and got better as it went on.”
Giroux, the best addition the Senators made in the off-season, stepped up again by tying the score 1-1 with only 7.5 seconds left in the second period during a Senators power play.
