Funeral procession underway for slain rookie OPP officer
BARRIE—A funeral is underway for an Ontario Provincial Police officer who was shot in an ambush last week in a county on the Niagara Peninsula.
Officers were asked to remove their peaked caps as Pierzchala's casket was carried to the front of the arena at the start of the ceremony.Pierzchala — who had passed his probation to become a police constable just hours before his death — is the fifth Canadian officer to be killed in the line of duty since September, the fourth in Ontario alone.
Randall McKenzie, 25, and Brandi Crystal Lyn Stewart-Sperry, 30, have been charged with first-degree murder. They each made a brief court appearance in Cayuga last week. Hamilton police arrested McKenzie in early December 2021, charging him with 12 assault- and firearm-related offences, according to the documents.
