Osmond is a long-time fan of the team who lost his prized collection of Leafs memorabilia when his home was destroyed by post-tropical storm Fiona. – ContributedCHANNEL-PORT AUX BASQUES, N.L. — Brian Osmond didn’t quite know what was happening when Port aux Basques Mayor Brian Button called him on Tuesday, Oct. 25, to say he had something for him.
It was no joke, though, when he opened one of the boxes and found a jersey with his name on it that had been autographed by Leafs president Brendan Shanahan. “I know it does not come close to fixing your situation but I do hope it brings a few smiles,” said Shanahan.“But it wouldn’t matter if it was another organization, I’d say the same thing.”
Among the items lost were some special pieces of hockey memorabilia that Osmond had collected over the years and proudly displayed in his rec room. His collection included jerseys from his beloved Leafs and a few from his hometown team, the Port aux Basques Mariners. To help Osmond restart his collection, Button presented him with a blanket, a couple of hats, a sweater and a coat from the items the Leafs had sent.“Ever since we got TV. I’m still waiting for the cup,” he said with a laugh.
