“Remember, this is all before computers, so we’re talking about handwritten lists and letters sent by mail,” said Trevor Hancock, the Green Party of Canada's first leader. “It makes me feel old just talking about it.”

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” It was that famous Margaret Mead quote that served as inspiration for Trevor Hancock when he helped start the Green Party of Canada 40 years ago. Hancock, a retired professor of public health living in Victoria, B.C., was the party’s first leader when the Greens were officially established in 1983 at Ottawa’s Carleton University. Now 74, it’s been decades since Hancock was involved in party operations, but he remains a card-carrying Green and a passionate defender of ecological politics.
