From the back of his Yorkville shop, Max Smirnov has amassed a horde of military antiques he’s collected since 2010, including guns, swords and bayonets, most from the World Wars.

Canadian helmet, covered in scratches and nicks. He then points to a dinged-up gas mask from the same period, both arranged on a desk. “Maybe that saved someone’s life,” he says. “These artifacts tell stories about important moments in history.”

Here, he and his staff evaluate heirlooms and jewellery, not unlike those “Antiques Roadshow” appraisals. They don’t deal much in military items, except for war medals, Smirnov says. His collection is personal. Born in Riga, Latvia, Smirnov didn’t grow up with a lot of high-tech toys and video games, so he and his friends played an air-gun game called Germans vs. Russians, common in Eastern Europe at the time. That’s where his interest in Second World War history and weaponry began; it grew stronger once he learned that his great-grandfather saw combat.
