Developer intended to build near historic Juno Beach; federal government to buy property back
The cancellation of a proposed condominium development on Juno Beach in France - where Canadian troops landed and fought during the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944 - has pleased many Canadians nationally and locally.
340 Canadian soldiers died and more than 800 were wounded forcing occupying German troops away from the Normandy beach as a start to the Allied liberation of western Europe in the Second World War. A French development company had plans to build condos near the Juno Beach Centre, a privately operated Canadian museum. It also launched a grassroots Canadian movement called Save Juno Beach in an effort to protect the historical nature of the area.“I don’t think there’s any person at the Legion that doesn’t think that it should not have gotten to this point. I get it that a developer wants to make money but who allowed him access to that land in the first place?” Stewart said.
“He should’ve been on it right away. There should’ve been more outcry from his office before this,” Stewart said.A 99-year lease of the property will also be negotiated.
