A new program aimed at recycling more soft drink containers with thousands of new bins will go ahead despite Environment Minister David Piccini’s warning he won’t allow the beverage industry to make shoppers pay fees designed to foot the bill for them.
Piccini’s move raises the question of whether beverage makers will simply boost prices to cover the cost of recycling — a strategy that could detract from transparency as Ontario tries to meet more ambitious targets for recycling and“It’s a big question,” one industry source told the Star Friday on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.
The Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association, which represents major producers like Coca-Cola, said Friday it “continues to work productively with government and industry to launch Recycle Everywhere on June 1.” The fees are intended to fund more than 250,000 recycling bins across the province at pools and arenas, malls, stadiums, offices and other places where people congregate, given that one-third of beverage containers are disposed of away from home.
“This government is worried about getting blamed for a new tax,” Karen Wirsig, Environmental Defence’s plastics program manager, told the Star.Gary Sands of the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers said he welcomed the minister’s decision. “Let’s hit the reset button,” he said.
