Following a tight race, Mark Sutcliffe has made it to the finish line as Ottawa’s newest mayor. The 54-year-old former journalist was declared the winner over Catherine McKenney Monday night by major broadcasters as the votes were still being counted.
Following a tight race, Mark Sutcliffe has made it to the finish line as Ottawa’s newest mayor.
Sutcliffe and McKenney aimed to take the city in different directions, said Jerald Sabin, an assistant professor at Carleton University's School of Public Policy and Administration. McKenney, first elected to council in 2014, ran on a campaign to improve city services like public transit, increase accountability at city hall and tackle major issues such as affordability. Last month, they promised to end chronic homelessness within four years.
“There was a perceived absence of city leadership on the ground in the downtown core of Ottawa,” he said.
