Still embroiled in an ugly labour dispute with Canada Soccer, the women’s team put on an impressive performance against Brazil.
“I’m really proud of the group for what they’ve come through and to have to bounce back,” said Canada head coach Bev Priestman following the game. “We said today we have to continue moving forward and we did that.
The reigning Olympic gold-medallists and two-time bronze-medallists are looking for equity with their male counterparts, who competed in a men’s FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1986 this past November in Qatar, eliminated in the group stage. “I think for role models for young girls or boys coming through, I think it really stands for where I think we need to head. We’re in 2023 and I think we’re pushing, but at the same time for me as a coach, I want this resolved as soon as possible. We have a World Cup around the corner, what I can say is Canada when they good give account of themselves, we can go and do incredible things.”
“I think the Japan game has come at a great time for us,” Priestman said. “As part of our World Cup group, we play and island team that have a back five and play a similar formation. Japan will be a hard team to break down defensively, they’re very structured and well-organized and that will be a great test for us.
“The amount of miles she covers on the pitch go unnoticed,” Priestman said. “She will do anything to help this team win. I think off the pitch, she’s grown into a leader, she is putting the future ahead of herself personally, and her values of a human being to deal with are second to none. She’s an outstanding human being who is growing, has gone through adversity in her career and continues to do amazing things on and off the field.
