First Nations focus groups said “the burden to educate often fell on Indigenous individuals themselves at a great deal of personal time and effort.” Findings were based on interviews with First Nations residents on reserves last Sept. 29, which was one day before the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

“Few could recall any recent actions taken by the Government of Canada specifically related to ensuring access to clean drinking water,” said the report. Indigenous people also told pollsters more immediate concerns included inadequate housing, lack of high-speed internet, crime rates and “a strained relationship with law enforcement,” the findings said.

“Just as we honour veterans and highlight our values as a nation on Remembrance Day, we would honour survivors and those lost on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation but also reflect on our path as a nation, on our values,” said Guilbeault.
