Tom Hipsz says he was just trying to expose material at Sheridan College that he believed would actually create division, rather than equity
While Hipsz portrayed himself as a whistleblower of sorts, Canada generally has some of the worst whistleblower-protection laws in the developed world, said David Hutton, a fellow with Metropolitan University’s Centre for Free Expression. And even that legislation at the federal and provincial levels only covers public-sector employees.
Even so, Hutton said he does not believe Hipsz qualifies as a whistleblower. They are insiders who bring to light situations that could cause serious harm to the public, such as a radiation leak or dangerous medicine, but the Sheridan employee’s claim to be exposing such harm “doesn’t stand up, really,” he argued.
In response, his manager sent him an “expectations letter” reminding him that he must act with respect and civility and do nothing to negatively affect Sheridan’s interests. Hipsz deleted his Twitter account in response, but said he didn’t believe the letter was part of a disciplinary process. Feeling that he would get no further within the college or his union, Hipsz contacted Rebel News, eventually passing on a slide deck from one of the anti-racism tutorials. Asked by a Rebel staff member when the program was offered, he mentioned that it was shortly after the appointment of a new vice president of equity and inclusion, who turned out to be Jane Ngobia, a Black woman.
