Team Canada captain Shane Wright celebrates a first-period goal during a World Junior Championships game in Halifax on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2022. Ryan Taplin/SaltWire Network fileThe ongoing world junior hockey tournament in Halifax and Moncton has been a huge lift to hotels and restaurants in the host cities, but the big surprise has been the early upsets.
It looks like Team Canada should win gold but in a one-game, “winner take all” scenario, where a hot goalie, bad breaks or penalties play such a huge factor, anything can happen. As we near the halfway mark in the NHL schedule, the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs are first and second in the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division.
The Leafs are loaded with proven scorers in Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares, while young Michael Bunting has blossomed into a solid two-way top six forward, and a clever penalty killer. The Leafs top players have been the team’s best players almost every night, and barring injury this club is in for a long playoff run.
The Rangers play Tampa Bay and Florida this weekend, so let’s hope the boys from Gotham start another winning streak.Carolina travels to Tampa Bay to meet Tom Brady and a Bucs’ team going nowhere. Panthers QB Sam Darnold is in career-best form, so take Carolina to win outright. Green Bay hopes to keep their playoff hopes alive with a win over visiting Minnesota . Green Bay is the betting favourite, but I’m not sold on Green Bay or Aaron Rodgers. Vikings QB Kirk Cousins has been great all year. Bet Minnesota to win as four-point road dogs.
