Canada’s agriculture minister has signed off on the long-awaited gene-editing guidelines years after they were first announced, adding new measures to appease stakeholders in the organics sector. Minister Bibeau announced on Wednesday that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will be adopting updates to its regulations on how the government intends to handle crops grown from genetically edited seeds.

The announcement clarifies that certain varieties of crops developed through gene-editing will not be considered genetically modified organisms or GMOs, and thus will not require government assessments.
