FOUNTAIN BY SASCHA BRAUNIG. OIL ON LINEN OVER PANEL, 122 X 152 CM; FROM THE COLLECTION OF JILL AND PETER KRAUS & VAULT BY AZADEH ELMIZADEH. OIL ON LINEN, 152 X 122 CM; FRANZ KAKA, TORONTO
Sascha Braunig’s exhibition takes its name, Lay Figure, from the jointed doll used by the B.C.-born artist as a stand-in for the human figure. These beautifully crafted paintings portray a figure breaking free of pictorial grids or twisting itself outside of the typical depiction of the female body, morphing into a neon sign or a dress form. Now based in Portland, Me.
Montreal artists Chloë Lum and Yannick Desranleau have been working in collaboration since 2000, first as musicians in rock band AIDS Wolf and then as artists in Seripop, creating band posters and screen prints; this eventually morphed into their present-day multidisciplinary art practice involving dancers, musicians and choreographers.
