From Hate to Hope, a report into the rise of hate crimes in B.C. during the COVID\u002D19 pandemic was released Tuesday by Human Rights Commissioner Kasari Govender.
The report’s 12 recommendations says the solicitor general and minister of emergency management should include provisions in emergency planning to “address a rise in hate speech and hate-fuelled violence” and “low-barrier mental health supports should be widely available to help people with the potential anxiety, fear, uncertainty and isolation associated with emergencies.”
The recommendations include asking B.C.’s attorney general to change the human rights code to include “social condition” as a prohibited ground for discrimination “for the purposes of hateful publications,” joining the other protected categories of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and Indigeneity “and especially by women with intersecting identities.”
“Hateful incidents ranged from hateful comments and slurs, graffiti, property damage, physical harassment and aggression, threats of violence and people being spat on or having garbage thrown at them to violent assaults,” the report said.
