Climatologist David Phillips said in an interview that there was a spike in air quality on Diwali last year due to a large number of fireworks.
Environment Canada has put a special air quality statement into effect for the Mississauga-Brampton region ahead of Diwali celebrations Monday night, advising that weather conditions could trap smoke from a large concentration of fireworks.
“The air is warmer above the city than at the surface, and there’s lots of sunshine and light winds,” said Phillips. These conditions, paired with smoke from fireworks in a concentrated area, can lead to worse air quality.
