Eid festivities at Lansdowne help mark the end of Ramandan for Ottawa Muslims
Her table was an oasis of calm in the bustling pavilion as Ottawa’s largest Eid festival drew a sold-out crowd of Muslim families celebrating the end of Ramadan. A total of about 4,000 people were expected to attend the festival’s daytime and evening events on Saturday.

PHOTO BY LYNN SAXBERG / POSTMEDIA“Ramadan is a time of sacrifice to get closer to God,” explained Sherif Awad, a spokesperson for the Muslim Association of Canada. “We abstain from food and drink, and then at Eid we celebrate the dedication, the sacrifice and the worship of God that we did during Ramadan.
“This is a smaller venue but it’s worked out well so far,” Awad said, noting the separate area for prayers this year — across the plaza at Lansdowne’s Horticulture Building. Another new measure is the fact that it’s a ticketed event, with 3,000 tickets sold in advance.
