“We’ve been at the bargaining table, trying to ratify an agreement since November,” said Carrie Boisvert, vice president of CUPE 218, in an interview with Durham Radio News.
“What brings us out here is to show this employer that it’s important to ask that we ratify a fair collective agreement,” she added.“Anything that we’re bringing to the table is non-monetary,” she said. “It doesn’t cost this employer a dime.”“We’re looking for language around our working conditions,” she added. “We have a unit [to which] this employer is trying to disaffiliate some of their members.
Boisvert said education workers have been dealing with violent incidents. “Our EAs understand that certain students that we work with have needs,” she said. “And we want to work with them – we want to give them the opportunity to learn in the schools – but we want to do so safely.” “We’ve had support […] since we’ve been bargaining centrally,” said Boisvert. “We have parents that see what is happening in the schools. When this first came about in the central agreement, and it was being ratified, we had parents call the union office, we had parents dropping off coffee, dropping off gift cards.”“Ask your children what [is] happening in the schools,” she added. “Ask them how many times they’re being removed from a classroom because of violence.
