“That means we need to be cautious about our economic relations with the world’s dictators” Freeland said, because they think we are “fools or liars” while “they are cynical and craven and they think we are, too.” Despite that, Freeland said, we need to work with China “to preserve the global commons. That means, first and foremost, continuing to work together on tackling the pre-eminent threat of climate change … We cannot save the planet today without working with Beijing.
If China’s leaders engage in “wolf diplomacy”, if they see our values as “hostile and inferior” and believe we must be “fools or liars” because “they are cynical and craven,” why should we trust anything they say about honouring any international agreement to reduce their emissions? Unless they see it as undermining our economy by replacing reliable forms of energy with unreliable ones, while giving China a free pass to do anything it wants.
