The announcement by Donald Trump that he plans a third bid for the White House does not bode well for the Republican Party or for Americans.

His brand is tainted. Voters rejected many candidates he backed in the recent midterms. Two high-profile candidates in particular stand out: Broadcaster Dr. Mehmet Oz lost a Senate race in Pennsylvania and former TV news anchor Kari Lake was defeated by her Democratic opponent in her attempt to become governor of Arizona.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Ottawa SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

Another delicate issue that’s becoming more apparent is that of age. President Joe Biden, who turns 80 next week, and Trump, 76, are the two oldest presidents in the history of the U.S. At a time when most sensible seniors are playing shuffleboard, these two elderly gentlemen are vying for the opportunity to be leader of the free world. Age imparts limitations on both the body and the mind. Biden at times appears confused.

According to midterm exit polls, Trump just isn’t all that popular, especially in the key states he will need to win. In New Hampshire, his support was only at 30%, while in Florida it was 33%. Polls comparing him to DeSantis, released by a conservative group, Club for Growth, once a staunch Trump ally, show the former president trailing dramatically.

The presidency is not a vanity project to fuel the ego of one person. It’s too important for that. Trump should heed the warnings, bow out gracefully and allow someone else to carry the GOP banner.
