StarEditorial: We are hoping for a mayor who is a consensus builder unwilling to abuse their new-found “strong mayor” powers — a leader with a clear vision to make Toronto a more equitable, liveable city.

taught Torontonians anything, it’s that anything is possible — even the juxtaposition of the words “John Tory” and “scandal” in the same headline.

In what ways — if any — should future mayoral hopefuls try to emulate former mayor Tory and in what ways should they try to forge their own path for a city grappling with enormous challenges? The first is that no matter their political bent, Toronto’s next mayor should follow Tory’s example, not necessarily on matters of policy but rather on matters of leadership style.

That’s why it’s our sincere hope that the next mayor of Toronto dream bigger and be bolder than their predecessor — a man who, despite having resigned in scandal, seemed to adhere to an unofficial policy throughout his mayoralty that one must never rock the boat. Toronto needs a visionary leader with the chutzpah to champion novel solutions to these problems, even if those solutions challenge conventional wisdom and public opinion about the way things have always been done.

Finally, the city needs a leader who will rock the boat but also keep it afloat. In other words, a leader who in addition to making wise financial decisions for the city, will advocate loudly and tirelessly for changes to a fiscal system that is rigged against big cities, in which Toronto is at the financial mercy of the provincial and federal governments.
