There\u0027s some faint hope of a few days to glide along nature’s most awesome urban skateway. If so, enjoy them.

Visitors are “mesmerized by the idea of people skating to work or skating to school.”
Which is one reason preparations for tackling the impact of the shifting climate are underway, scientifically and economically. Carleton University researchers are exploring ways to extend the season, including the use of “slush cannons” to help spur the ice buildup and robotic snow-blowers to clear the surface.
Marketing experts know they’ll have to emphasize other winter activities in future in case the canal doesn’t come through. For instance, as Van Kregten notes, Ottawa offers excellent cross-country ski trails from the west, east and south that follow local waterways into the heart of the city. “These have the potential to become iconic activities” too, she argues.
Winter’s not over yet; there is hope of a few days to glide along nature’s most awesome urban skateway. If so, enjoy them: we don’t know how many more years we’ll have.
