StarEditorial: It’s inexplicable the government knew for two years about an MP’s family being possibly targeted and apparently did nothing about it.
That a Chinese operative in this country would target the family of a Canadian MP in retribution for a vote in the House of Commons is repugnant. Sadly, given evidence of such behaviour which has mounted over the years, it is not shocking.
Chong had drawn Beijing’s anger because of his Commons work in deeming the Chinese treatment of its Uyghur minority a genocide The manner in which his situation has been handled has shaken colleagues and for good reason. Is Chong alone as a victim of this harassment? We don’t know the answer? Yet the Trudeau’s statements didn’t square with previous testimony by his chief of staff, Katie Telford, that nothing on intelligence or security is ever kept from the prime minister.
