StarEditorial: The Liberal Party of Ontario has lots of onerous – but, as history suggests, not hopeless – leadership and policy work to do.
There are few places in which Ontario Liberals — who have finally announced a date for naming their next leader — find much comfort these days. But perhaps the history books provide one.
And the Liberals — Ontario’s governing party from 2003 to 2018, now reduced to an embarrassing eight seats — are at present about as nearly dead as it gets. Perhaps predictably, as the Star’s Rob Ferguson reported, the news was greeted by Liberals who called it either just what the party needed or foolish.
The Liberals promised at least five leadership debates. Voting will take place Nov. 25 and 26 using ranked ballots and a new one-member, one-vote system. Liberal MPs Nate Erskine-Smith and Yasir Naqvi have been exploring bids. And rookie MPPs Stephanie Bowman, Adil Shamji and Ted Hsu have also held fingers to the wind.
