In the face of this incomprehensible injustice, we must ensure some small measure of justice is done. In this case, police have charged two individuals — Randall McKenzie and Brandi Stewart-Sperry — with Pierzchala’s murder. Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Thomas Carrique said he was “outraged” McKenzie was on bail and called for changes to the bail system. The OPP’s concerns were echoed by Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Toronto Mayor John Tory, and have led to calls to deny bail to chronic, repeat offenders.
But any proposed changes to the bail system must stay true to a foundational principle of our criminal justice system — the presumption of innocence.
