Alberta is moving ahead with a common\u002Dsense step in the treatment of people suffering from drug addiction.

Premier Danielle Smith’s government this week announced it will introduce legislation that will allow people with severe drug addiction to be placed into involuntary treatment.

Speaking about it at the opening of a new treatment facility on Monday, Smith said: “We think that this is the most compassionate way to try to address this problem because we’re watching people slowly killing themselves on the street and we’ve got to draw a line and say we’re just not going to let that happen anymore.” She emphasized this would be used only as a last resort.Article content

Governments should expand the legislation to include those suffering from serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. In the 1970s and 1980s, activists convinced governments that institutionalizing the mentally ill in hospitals contravened their human rights. Most governments didn’t take much convincing. Closing psychiatric facilities saved them hundreds of millions of dollars nationwide. Finding treatment for people suffering from severe mental illness is difficult.
