StarEditorial: Tory’s resignation has given us an opportunity to choose a new path for the city. The only way to make that choice is to cast a vote.

Needless to say that’s a lot of names for voters to remember. The challenge for candidates will be in differentiating themselves from the rest of the pack. So far, it appears, the theme of the election is safety on Toronto’s transit system and concerns over random acts of violence, includingSeveral candidates have announced their intentions to improve transit safety.

Hunter has also launched a transit plan that involves pairing social workers with transit officers, installing glass sliding doors on subway platforms, and establishing a city-wide network of “community ambassadors” to conduct “safety audits” of their local transit stations. Matlow, on the other hand, has his own ideas for Ontario Place. The city councillor announced plans to withhold the city owned land there that the Ford government would need to go ahead with the controversial spa project. As mayor, he would instead use the site for a revitalized public park.

In the end, the next mayor will have to pay for their bold ideas — a daunting undertaking in a city facing a nearly $1 billion budget shortfall on the heels of a pandemic. In addition to laying out their platforms in these coming weeks, the candidates will need to explain exactly how they intend to tackle the financial hole in the municipal budget. That includes their strategy for getting senior governments to negotiate a new fiscal framework to support cities.
